The gniew castle was a Teutonic castle of the Teutonic Order in the former West Prussian city Gniew, today Gniew . With her the Vistula was controlled.
history
Mewe was founded by the German Order in 1276. In 1283, this square brick structure with an inner courtyard and a side length of around 47 meters was built in the mouth of the heel , which shields the city from the Vistula. The cube is flanked by three slender towers - instead of such a north tower, a keep with a diameter of 12.5 meters was built.
In 1466 the castle came under Polish rule. After the First Partition of Poland in 1772 , the castle belonged to Prussia and was used as a barracks. In 1803 it served as a warehouse, with the arched windows walled up and most of the Gothic vaults demolished as a remodeling measure. The structural condition of the castle deteriorated noticeably. In the middle of the 19th century, after having been used as a prison, the castle was restored in the spirit of the romantic era with the removal of modifications. At that time, the keep was demolished up to half its height and supplemented by an attachment similar to the other three towers. In addition to the fire of 1921, destruction was also caused by the Second World War, after the building was poorly secured.
In 1967, the local company Zakłady Mechanizmów Okrętowych FAMA began the reconstruction, which was completed with a second construction phase after 1992, supported by the community.
Since then, the castle has been the venue for historical festivals, spectacles and knight tournaments and a popular tourist destination.
