Neudek Castle

The Neudek Castle ( Czech Zřícenina hradu Nejdek ) was a medieval rock castle in the center of the Czech town of Nejdek ( German  Neudek ) in the Ore Mountains . The last remnant is the Romanesque-Gothic tower, which is the city's landmark.

history

Castle

The beginnings of the castle are unclear. According to hypotheses, the plant is as stately fortress have been built in the late 13th century to early 14th century. At the same time, Upper Franconian Zinnseifner settled below the castle . The place Neudek emerged from the settlement. According to the great feudal letter of September 20, 1341, the first documented castle owner was the knight Konrad Plick. After several changes of ownership, the castle passed to Count Schlick in 1446 . In 1602, Count Stephan Schlick sold Neudek to Friedrich Colonna Freiherr von Fels . At the beginning of the Thirty Years War , the castle on the rock was probably still present and inhabited. In the course of the Counter Reformation , the rule came in 1633 to Count Hermann Czernin . His son, Count Humprecht, probably caused Johann Czernin to demolish the old walls because they were in disrepair and to use the building material to build the new castle in Neudek.

tower

The trapezoidal in cross section keep remained the only part of the plant and was used as bell tower of the affiliated parish church  of St. Martin converted. Originally the roof was a round dome. On top of this stood a small tower in which the mountain bell was hung. In the 18th century a new entrance was built into the ground floor. In 1786 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stopped in Neudek on his journey from Schneeberg to Karlsbad . The rock tower fascinated him so much that he drew it. The tower was inhabited by a tower guard until 1790 . The living room was on the tower. It was supplied by a water pipe that led up to the tower. According to tradition, the tower is said to have swayed so much that the wash basin in the Türmer's apartment moved significantly. The poor condition of the building caused the guard and his family to move out. In 1831 the Türmer apartment was demolished because of the risk of collapse and given a new pointed helmet.

Peal

The larger, eight hundredweight bell was cast in 1656 by order of Humprecht Johann Graf Czernin von Chudenitz and bears the following inscription:

“Humprecht Joan. Czernin des Heil. Roman Empire Count von Chudenitz, Diana Maria Countess Czernin, née Margravine Hipolita v. Catoldo Anno 1656 to praise God and honor Mary the Virgin the bell was cast. Leypold Mayor; Benedict Link, Hans Schuster church father, Melchior Mathäus Michelin citizen of Pilsen, poured me in 1656. "

The second smaller, so-called Barbara bell, was cast in 1578 on behalf of Countess Barbara Schlick in memory of her deceased husband and melted down in 1917. It bears the following inscription:

“In the 1578 year on Monday before Jakobi, the well-born Herr Christoph the elder Schlick Graf zu Passaum, Herr zu Weisskirchen, Elbogen and Neudek, that of his and his well-born wife Barbara Schlick, Countess, is gently different in God from this world into eternal life , a born of Maschau and Kolovrat and his beloved consort ordered to have this bell poured to the church in the mountain town of Neudek in memory of his grace.
