Hermann Graf Czernin von und zu Chudenitz (born July 24, 1576 in Nedrahovice in Bohemia ; † February 6, 1651 in Kost , Bohemia) was an Austrian diplomat and soldier. He came from the Bohemian aristocratic family Czernin von Chudenitz.

biography

In 1594 he fought against the Turks under Peter Wok von Rosenberg . In 1598 he made a trip to Italy and from there to the Holy Land , then via Egypt to Spain . In 1603 he was Emperor Rudolf II's chamberlain and in 1614 he became captain of the Old Town in Prague . From February 1616 to November 1617 he made his first trip as ambassador to Constantinople . The diary of his trip was kept by his secretary Adam Werner von Crailsheim. His entourage consisted of 150 people. In 1620 he served in the army of the Bavarian Duke Maximilian I , who went to war against the "Winter King" Friedrich von der Pfalz . As captain of the old town of Prague, he attended the execution of the rebels, including his brother Diwisch .

On March 15, 1623 he was raised to the status of imperial baron and the coat of arms was improved: it was given the red-white-red heart shield and the letters F, M, R for Ferdinand, Matthias and Rudolf , the emperors he had served. The wings on the crest indicate his many journeys to distant lands, the sword and the palm branch, which is held by an armored hand, indicate that he was brave in battle and wise in council.

In 1624 he was councilor of the Bohemian Chamber, in 1625/1626 he was steward of the imperial troops that Albrecht von Waldstein ( Wallenstein ) led against Denmark. In 1625 he married the widow of Christoph Harant von Polschitz and Weseritz , Anna Salomena von Harant, née von Horschitz, who died in 1632. On May 20, 1627 Hermann was by Emperor Ferdinand III. raised to the hereditary imperial count. In 1629 he became captain of the Leitmeritz district and in 1631 of the Saaz district.

For the army of Friedlander Albrecht von Waldstein he provided a regiment of cuirassiers and 1000 horses and received the title of "orderly Christian over 1000 horse riders". In 1633 he got his second marriage to Anna Sylvia Caretto . In 1635 Hermann was appointed Count Palatinate ( Comes Palatinus ); thereby he had various rights, u. a. to ennoble. In 1639 he founded the family entails commission . Over the years he has bought over 99 properties. to name just a few: Engelshaus, Gießhübel, Hartenstein, Buchau, Neudeck, Scheles, Pladen, Petersburg, Zleb, Kost and Schmiedeberg in Silesia.

On June 30, 1644, at the age of 68, Hermann traveled to Constantinople for the second time as the imperial ambassador. The trip lasted until May 31, 1645. This time he wrote the diary personally. Today it is owned by Vinzenz Czernin at Rain Castle in Carinthia . He is buried in the Czernin Chapel of St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague next to his widow Anna Sylvia Caretto, who married Margrave Wilhelm von Baden und Hochberg after his death .
