The Olesko Castle is located on the border of the Busk Raion in western Ukraine, near the city of Olesko , a good 70 km east of Lviv . The first records of the castle date from 1390 when Pope Boniface IX. bequeathed the castle to the bishop of Halytsch as a gift.

The original castle complex was built on a 50 m high hill. In addition to massive masonry, the defense system was protected by a moat and a swamp in front. In the early Middle Ages, the castle has had an eventful history, changed hands several times and at times belonged to Poland , Latvia and Hungary .

From the 15th century, Olesko was used by local nobles as a mansion. In 1605 Jan Danilowicz , voivode of Ruthenia and grandfather of John III bought it. Sobieski the plant. Later the castle was sold to the noble Koniecpolski family . Stanislaw Koniecpolski sold the property to John III in 1682 for PLN 400. Sobieski, who became King of Poland in 1674. After extensive restoration and redesign, he temporarily resided in the castle after 1687.

In the early 18th century, the castle was finally acquired by the Rzewuski family, who moved a large part of the furniture to their actual seat, Pidhirtsi Castle .

But above all, the castle is the birthplace of the Polish King John III. Sobieski, who played a decisive role in the victory over the Ottomans during the siege of Vienna . Sobieski also stayed here often, and many art objects testify to his presence. Olesko Castle is a popular destination for Polish tourists due to its historical significance as one of Sobieski's mansions.

As early as the end of the 16th century or the beginning of the 17th century, extensive repairs were carried out on the early medieval castle complex.
