Osterode Castle

The castle Osterode was a Teutonic castle of the Teutonic Order in the then East Prussia Osterode today Ostróda .

history

The original settlement was secured in 1270 with a wooden wall system, which was then made of stone from 1349 to 1370. Shortly before, a separate commandery had been created. In 1376 and 1381 Lithuanians conquered the city. After the Battle of Tannenberg, the knight Klaus von Döhringen conquered the castle and handed it over to the Polish King Jogaila , who was now besieging the Marienburg, along with the corpse of Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen . A few months later, the order was able to recapture the castle and the city. In the city war she was a bone of contention between the mercenary leader Kinsberg and von Schlieben, who took turns conquering them. In the equestrian war the Poles tried in vain to conquer the place. In the Duchy of Prussia the castle was run by an official governor. From February 21st to April 1st, 1807 Napoleon stayed in the castle complex (on the 1st floor of the north wing, 4th and 5th windows as seen from the lake). According to his own admission, he spent the most fruitful time of his life in Osterode:

“Cette époque de repos au milieu de la vieille Prusse et de la Pologne est une des plus remarquables de ma vie; elle n'en fut ni la moins critique ni la moins glorieuse "

- Napoleon

But after a good five weeks he ended his presence, moved his stay to Finckenstein Castle and left the Osterode Castle to his Marshal Davout . The castle was completely burned down during World War II . Reconstruction began in 1974 and is now a museum .
