location

The eponymous small town of Roquefixade is about ten kilometers (driving distance) west of Lavelanet . The castle gets its name from its position: it stands on a steep rock spur about 150 meters above the valley. The origin of the name comes from the Catalan expression roca fisada , which means "split rock". It was not until the village was named after, later, the castle, which since 1995 as historique monument under monument stands.

history

The castle was first mentioned in 1034. It may have been besieged and destroyed during the Albigensian Crusade , but was later rebuilt. Around 1278 the castle was placed under royal administration and housed a garrison . In 1463 the property was handed over to Gaston IV, Count von Foix .

The castle lasted until 1632. At that time, Louis XIII camped . in the region on his way to Toulouse, where he wanted to see the beheading of Henri II de Montmorency , who had risen against Richelieu . Louis XIII. took the opportunity to destroy the castle. It was not rebuilt and served the residents of the town of the same name as a quarry.
