The Ordensburg Wartenburg ( Polish Zamek w Barczewie ) is an Ordensburg in Wartenburg ( Barczewo ), Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship . It is a castle in historical East Prussia that goes back to a bishop's castle .

history

In 1325, the bishop of Warmia Eberhard von Neisse had a watchtower built. The castle was built in 1364 under Bishop Johann II. Stryprock at the same time as the city wall , but the actual construction could have taken place in the next few years. The castle was in the northeast corner of the city wall surrounding the city.

At the beginning of the Thirteen Years' War , the castle was conquered by the rebels from the Prussian Union, but was recaptured in 1455 by mercenaries of the order under Georg von Schlieben and held until the end of the war in 1466. The castle burned down in 1594, but was rebuilt soon after. A fire in 1798 almost completely destroyed the castle. A classical Protestant school building was built on the foundations of the castle. The church of St. Anna in the newly built building is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Warmia.

During the imposition of martial law in the People's Republic of Poland , many opponents of the regime were imprisoned in Wartenburg. The East Prussian Gauleiter Erich Koch was also imprisoned here until the end of his life.
