The Weidenburg castle ruins are the ruins of a spur castle in the southeast of the municipality of Kötschach-Mauthen , south of Würmlach.

history

The castle was probably built around 1200 as a ministerial seat on a rock spur that slopes steeply to the south and east. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1225 as "castro Weideberg" together with a Johannes de Waidberch. Later it came into the possession of the Counts of Gorizia . Through the Peace of Pusarnitz in 1460, the castle came into the possession of Emperor Friedrich III. He gave the castle to the Hornberger brothers in 1461 and later to Hans von Graben . In 1545 the castle came to Sigmund Khevenhüller von Aichelberg as a fief, in 1571 Georg Khevenhüller bought the castle. In the 17th century the castle was owned by the Fromiller family. The castle fell into disrepair since the 18th century. In 1931 the castle began to be restored, but it burned down again in 1933. After the Second World War , the ruins came into the possession of the Austrian Federal Forests .

Building

The castle consists of a former, rectangular, four-storey Palas and grown on the southwest corner, square keep . The walls are partially preserved up to ten meters high.
