Bårby Castle
The castle of Barby ( Swedish Barby borg ) is a prehistoric castle on the Swedish island of Oland . It is the only one of its kind on Öland that used a natural escarpment as part of the enclosure. It is located about half a kilometer south of Södra Barby in the municipality of Mörbylånga , in the southern part of the island.
construction
The castle consists of a wall in the shape of a semicircle , which on the edge of a plateau offers protection to the east. The diameter is up to 150.0 meters. The interior of the castle was reclaimed in earlier times . Findings make it clear that the castle had two building periods, in the late Iron Age and in the Middle Ages (as did Eketorp and Gråborg ). The castle is surrounded by several burial mounds , stone settings and menhirs . A large roe is located south of the castle .
meaning
The importance of fortifications or refuge has been given to systems all over Europe, the characteristic of which is the round shape and, as always, a demarcation from the surrounding area. The fornows of Sweden occur only in the area of the pagan Svear and indeed in such a number that their fortificative classification is untenable. Some of these systems are tiny and strategically unsustainable (lack of water).
