The castle ruin Lobenstein is located on a mountain cone in the middle of the old town of Bad Lobenstein . Since only the approximately 30 m high keep is well preserved and visible from afar, only the old tower is spoken of today. The tower is the landmark of the city of Bad Lobenstein and is now accessible as an observation tower .
history
The castle and defense tower were built between 950 and 1150. In the first documentary mention of the town of Lobenstein, there is talk of a knight seat, which was probably founded by the lords of Lobdeburg and expanded into a town. Until 1601 it served the lords of the city, first the bailiffs of Gera , and later the counts of Reuss as their residence. At that time, the old castle below the castle was completed and the castle itself was no longer inhabited.
Around 1620, Heinrich II Posthumus used the castle as a mint.
During the Thirty Years War the Swedes stormed the castle in 1632. Large parts have already been destroyed. In the further course of the war, the imperial troops continued to attack the facility. Only the 30-meter high castle keep , the remains of a wall tower, and some foundations have survived. They have been restored and can be viewed on a guided tour. The remains of the wall tower were roofed over and form a tower room.
