Burhan Ghalioun ( Arabic برهان غليون, DMG Burhān Ġalyūn ; * May 13, 1945 in Homs , Syrian Republic ), is a French - Syrian intellectual and a well-known figure in the Syrian opposition. Ghalioun taught political sociology at the University of Paris III (Sorbonne Nouvelle) in Paris .

Ghalioun studied sociology and philosophy at Damascus University . In 1969 he left Syria and studied in Paris. He obtained doctoral degrees in social sciences and humanities. With critical writings on al-Asad's rule , Ghalioun made a name for himself as an opposition activist in the late 1970s. Ghalioun was a co-founder of the Arab Organization for Human Rights , he taught political sociology at the University of Algiers and headed the Center d'Etudes sur l'Orient Contemporain (CEOC) in Paris.

From August 29, 2011, Ghalioun was the first chairman of the Syrian National Council that opposed the Ba'ath government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad . Ghalioun's position on the question of foreign military intervention has been the subject of internal criticism. In May 2012, Ghalioun offered to resign because he did not want to be a "divisive figure". He stayed in office until June 2012.

Since November 2012 he has also been a member of the National Coalition for Revolutionary and Opposition Forces .
