The aim of the organization is to defend the rights of Arab citizens and to protect them against any form of torture or persecution. The AOHR carries out regular actions to obtain the release of political prisoners in the Arab world.

The organization aims to demand "respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms of all citizens and residents of the Arab world; to defend every person whose human rights are contrary to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights , the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights are violated; regardless of political considerations, to request the release of arrested or imprisoned persons whose political freedom is restricted in any way because of their beliefs and political beliefs or because of their race, gender, color or language; legal counsel to perform where necessary and possible; to call for improvements in the conditions of detention for prisoners arrested for their convictions; to advocate for amnesty for people convicted on political grounds ". The goals of the AOHR include education, training and documentation in the field of human rights.

The organization carries out missions on the ground in which it tries to obtain the release of political prisoners. In some cases she acts as an observer and in other cases as a member of the defense. She receives complaints from individuals, groups and organizations and contacts the relevant authorities. In addition to the legal assistance it provides in some cases, the organization provides financial support to the victims' families. In cooperation with the Union of Arab Lawyers , she started a campaign for the freedom of people who were imprisoned in the Arab world for their convictions. It also provides further training in the form of conferences and seminars. According to UNESCO , the Arab Organization for Human Rights, in cooperation with the Union of Arab Lawyers, the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights and with the support of the Center for Human Rights in the United Nations , was instrumental in establishing the Arab Institute for Human Rights in Tunisia in 1989 responsible.

Report on the Palestinian Authority

In December 2012, the AOHR published a report that accused the Palestinian Authority (PA) of "inhuman practices and human rights violations against Palestinian civilians". The AOHR claims that between 2007 and 2011, the PA arrested a total of 13,271 Palestinians and tortured 96% of them, resulting in six deaths. The report claims the PA is raiding universities, hospitals and homes to arrest people who wanted to protest against the Israeli occupation. The report goes on to claim that PA officials confiscated equipment and money from the suspects. In the Palestinian Territories, however, the most important human rights organization is not the Arab Organization for Human Rights, but the PCHR (“Palestinian Center for Human Rights”) .
