Burkān al-Furāt ( Arabic بركان الفرات, DMG Burkān al-Furāt  'Volcano of the Euphrates') was an alliance formed by the People's Defense Units (YPG) and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) on September 12, 2014. In a joint statement, the establishment of a joint operations center was announced and the aim of the merger was communicated. Burkān al-Furāt aims to cleanse the Euphrates region from the radical Islamic IS militias and to ensure unity and solidarity among one another. The first test of this alliance was the battle for Kobanê . Thereafter, the Tall Abyad alliance conquered in mid-2015 what linked the areas of Kobanê and al-Hasakah. In October 2015, the Burkān al-Furāt merged into the new alliance of the Syrian Democratic Forces .
