The Burlington Northern Santa Fe LLC is an American holding company . The most important subsidiary is the railway company BNSF Railway . The company is part of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway group . The company is based in Fort Worth .

history

The mid-1990s saw the last major wave of mergers in the American railroad sector to date. The Santa Fe Pacific Corporation with the railway company Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was also in focus. The Burlington Northern Inc. received in the bidding war over direct rivals Union Pacific Corporation the contract. On December 16, 1994, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation was incorporated and, after approval by the Interstate Commerce Commission , the combined company began operations on December 22, 1995. In the period from the end of December 1996 to the beginning of January 1998, the corporate merger of the companies was completed.

In December 1999, the merger of the BNSF Corporation with the Canadian National Railway Company was announced. In March 2000, the antitrust authority Surface Transportation Board imposed a 15-month moratorium on account of previous problems with major mergers in the rail sector. The two companies then ended further merger efforts.

In August 2007, Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway began acquiring shares in the company. By the fall of 2009, Berkshire Hathaway had acquired 22.6% of the shares. On November 3, 2009, an offer was made to purchase the remaining $ 26 billion stock. The complete takeover of the company, now trading under the name Burlington Northern Santa Fe LLC, was completed on February 12, 2010. Since then, the company has not been traded on the stock exchange.

The company is based in north Fort Worth . Burlington Northern began building a central network monitoring center and a new company headquarters there in 1988. After completion in 1995, the site became the headquarters of the newly created Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation, the BNSF Railway and other subsidiaries.
