Burr Pond State Park is a state park in the US state of Connecticut in the area of Torrington , Litchfield County . The public recreation facility covers 177 hectares (438 acres) and was formerly part of the Paugnut State Forest . The park extends around Burr Pond , a 34 hectare (85 acre) reservoir.

history

Burr Pond was created in 1851 when Milo Burr dammed various streams to divert the water to generate energy. A water-powered tannery and three sawmills were operated. One of Burr's industrial buildings housed Gail Borden's first commercially successful condensed milk plant between 1857 and 1861 . The building burned down in 1877; the foundations can still be seen next to Burr Mountain Road . A sign points out the historical place.

Burr Pond and the surrounding area were originally part of the Paugnut State Forest . The land was transferred to the State Parks Division in 1949 and became a state park.

Freetime activities

Burr Pond is a reservoir that collects several small streams and drains between Burr Mountain in the north and Walnut Mountain in the south to the Still River, a tributary of the Farmington River . It has several small bays and islands, a stony shore and some steep drops. The maximum depth is 4 m (13 ft). In the south, the East Branch Naugatuck River rivals . Fish species are largemouth bass , chain pike , black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), American river perch , bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), common bluegill and catfish .

A 3.6 km (2.25 mi) loop leads around the pond. The 3.2 km (2 mi) long John Muir Trail connects the state park with Sunnybrook State Park on a route through the Paugnut State Forest . In addition, the park has a swimming beach, picnic areas, kiosk, boat rental and a boat ramp at the northern end of the pond.
