The Burren National Park ( English Burren National Park , Irish Páirc Náisiúnta Bhoirne ) is a protected area in the southwest of the karst landscape of Burren in the northwest of County Clare in Ireland . It was designated in 1991 and is about 15 km² in size. The national park is best known for its extensive rocky landscapes.
Due to the climate and the nature of the Burren you will find a variety of rare plants and flowers here. Many animal species also find a home here, including rare butterflies.
The author JRR Tolkien (1892–1973) visited the Burren several times and could have found his inspiration for the landscape of Middle-earth there.
There is a cave in the Burren that could have served as the namesake of a being named Gollum from his most famous work, The Lord of the Rings : the Pollnagollum .
