Crab Run is a tributary of Mahanoy Creek in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania , in the United States. The creek is about 4 km long and runs through Barry Township . The catchment area of the brook has an area of 9.1 km². While the watercourse is classified as polluted abandoned mining activity, this is not the case; no mining has taken place in its catchment area. However, some of its tributaries are polluted by agriculture. The Crab Run is not far from the Western Middle Anthracite Field. Its catchment area is classified as cold water fish and migratory fish. In 2001 the stream contained invertebrates , but no fish.

Run

The Crab Run begins in Barry Township not far from the census-designated place Beurys Lake . It initially flows a few hundred meters west-northwest and flows through a small lake before turning to the north-northeast. A few hundred meters further on, a nameless tributary joins from the left , and the Crab Run continues to flow northeast. A few hundred meters further on, it receives another unnamed stream from the right and flows at the foot of a mountain in a north-northwest direction. Then it turns again briefly to the north-northeast and flows through yet another small lake before it reaches its confluence with Mahanoy Creek.

The confluence of the Crab Run in Mahanoy Creek is 51.63 km above its mouth.

Hydrology

Some of the waterways in the Crab Run catchment area are considered unpolluted waterways. A watercourse is considered polluted by mining, but no mining has taken place in this area. Another watercourse in its catchment area is considered to be polluted by colmation , organic enrichment or low oxygen content due to pasture farming .

In August 2001, the flow rate of the Crab Run was measured at 0.017 m 3 / s and the pH value was 7.1. The net value of the alkalinity was 32 mg / L. The concentration of aluminum was 0.01 mg / l and that of manganese and iron was 0.05 and 0.15 mg / l. The nitrate concentration was 3.3 mg, the phosphorus concentration was 0.08 mg and the concentration of sulfates reached 9 mg / l.

geography

The mouth of the Crab Run is 226 m above sea level. The source is 273 m above sea level. Crab Run is south of the Western Middle Anthracite Field .

The stream bed of the Crab Run consists mainly of rubble , but partly also of fine silt . The Munsell color of the dried sediments of the stream is a dark yellowish brown.

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Crab Run covers an area of 9.1 km². The estuary is about one and a half kilometers from Taylorville. The creek lies entirely in the grid square Tremont of the United States Geological Survey .

A concrete bridge built with T-girders was built over the Crab Run in Taylorville in 1940. It is 7.6 m long and crosses Black Creek Road.

fauna

In 2001, 10 genera of invertebrates were observed in the Crab Run. More than 100 specimens of mosquitoes were counted. In each case 25 to 100 specimens black flies and Hydropsychidae were observed. Ephemerellidae , Crydalidae , Schnaken , Cambaridae and little bristles were counted individually. Only one or two specimens have been observed Nemouridae and Heptageniidae .
