The Burstyn barracks is a barracks of the Austrian Armed Forces in Zwölfaxing in Lower Austria , which is named after the weapons technician Gunther Burstyn .

History and description

The barracks was in 1940 during the Second World War , the Air Force of the Armed Forces as a military airfield built. At the beginning of the Balkan campaign , Kampfgeschwader 2 was stationed here and attacked the Yugoslav capital Belgrade from here on April 6, 1941 . The underground facilities in which the aircraft were housed no longer exist. The current address “Am Flugfeld” is also derived from the air base. After the Second World War, the area was in the hands of the Soviet occupying forces . When they withdrew in 1955, it was handed over to the Republic of Austria and from there to the Federal Army in 1956.

In the course of the Hungarian uprising of 1956 , units of the armored troop school in Hörsching ( Upper Austria ) were relocated to the east of the country to secure the eastern border of Austria . The parts of the tank reconnaissance school department that had come to Zwölfaxing remained there after the Soviets put down the Hungarian uprising. In 1957 the parts still in Hörsching followed, as did the tank school department.

In 1960 the 1st tank school department became independent and was named Panzerbataillon 33 . At this time the 9th Panzer Brigade was formed, called the 9th Panzer Grenadier Brigade from 1963 . The armored troop school was also newly formed from parts of the 9th Armored Brigade, Armored Battalion 4 and other parts of the armored troops.

In 1967 the barracks was named after the officer and weapons technician Gunther Burstyn . In contrast to this, however, the naming of the square in front of the Korneuburg Dabs barracks after Burstyn failed due to the resistance of the population and the city politicians.

Today in the barracks are the Panzerbataillon 33 (PzB 33), the 1st training company of the Army Squad School (HTS) and the supply and transport company of the Panzer Staff Battalion 3 (NTKp / PzStbB 3) as well as the test workshop of the vehicle and equipment technology department of the Armaments Office and defense technology (ARWT) . A 4 km² practice area extends behind the buildings in the front part.

There is a museum in the area in which various historical armored vehicles are exhibited.
