Burt Bales

Burt Bales (* 20 April 1917 in Stevensville ; † 26. October 1989 in San Francisco ) was an American jazz - Stride pianist .

Burt Bales began playing the piano at the age of twelve and performed in hotels and nightclubs in California from 1938 . In the 1940s he worked in San Francisco and played with Lu Watters ' Yerba Buena Jazz Band and was drafted into the US armed forces. In 1943 recordings were made during a session with Bunk Johnson . He was then discharged from the army for myopia and directed his own formations from 1943 to 1946 before becoming resident of the 1018 Club in San Francisco. He then played with Turk Murphy (1949-50), Bob Scobey and Marty Marsala , between 1954 and 1966 mainly as a soloist; He made regular appearances at Pier 23 . During this time numerous recordings were made for the labels Good Time Jazz , Arhoolie , ABC - Paramount and Euphonic .
