Bussumarius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bussumarius was a Celtic god who was worshiped by the Eastern Celts in what is now Romania . Bussurigios (Βουσσουριγίος) is possibly a variant of the name. Under the latter name he was worshiped by the Galatians in today's Turkey . The name appears in the spelling Bussumarus on the boischen Biatec - Hexadrachmen on. Perhaps the figure depicted on the coins of a naked man riding a horse (or a hybrid of horse-human and griffin) represents this god.

Meaning of the name

Bussumaros means "the one with the big lips" or "the big kisser" in Celtic, Bussurigios would accordingly be interpreted as "the royal kisser" or "the one whose lips are royal". This is best compared to the Indian god of thunder, Indra , who is nicknamed Suśpira and Śiprin »good-lipped«.

Interpretatio Romana et Graeca

In Gallo-Roman times, Bussumarius was equated with the Roman god Iupiter Optimus Maximus and with the sun god Sol . The Graecized Galatians equated him with Zeus , as the two dedicatory inscriptions northwest of Kalecık ( Ankara province , east of Lake Van in Turkey ) show. The founder was also a priest of Cybele .
