The Butterberg Tunnel is the two-lane road tunnel built from 1977 to 1979 along the B 241 through the Butterberg in the Harz Mountains . It is part of the Osttangente of Osterode , inaugurated on December 5, 1979 , which relieves the district of Freiheit from through traffic. The single-tube Butterberg tunnel is 393 m long and 10 m wide. The construction of the Butterberg Tunnel, for which 35,000 m³ of earth was excavated and for which 8,000 m³ of concrete and 1,000 t of steel were used, cost 13 million marks (due to inflation, this would correspond to around € 15.07 million today).
According to the authorities, the tunnel's safety equipment has been extensively upgraded due to the requirements of the EU Tunnel Directive. The retrofitting in the Butterberg Tunnel started in 2012 and was completed in autumn 2013. This work includes the production of installation areas for emergency services, extinguishing water containers and a container for collecting harmful water from a possible accident. Furthermore, barrier-free access was made in the tunnel, the road surface and parts of the drainage in the tunnel were renewed. In addition, almost all electrical components in the tunnel were comprehensively renewed. The technical system with the main components from 1979 was electrically decommissioned. After the subsequent renovation of the conduits and the dismantling of the electrical operating, control and safety technology, these were replaced with new components and tested. The total investment of the federal government for the complete renovation of the Butterberg Tunnel amounted to 2.4 million euros over both construction phases.
Renovation work on the concrete of the tunnel tube took place from October to November 2018. The costs for this amounted to 350,000 euros. The installation of a ventilation system is planned for 2019.
The tunnel is constantly monitored by the operations and tunnel control center (BZT) in Hanover.
