Location of freedom in Lower Saxony

Freedom was a valley village on the edge of the Harz and is part of the former district town of Osterode am Harz in the Göttingen district in southern Lower Saxony , Germany , with which it has also grown structurally.

geography

The village lies at the beginning of the " Old Harzstrasse " and on the Lerbach at the foot of the Harz Mountains . The village used to be east of Osterode and is now flowing into the urban area.

history

The first documentary mention comes from the 15th century by Albrecht II, when the place was in the principality of Grubenhagen . The written certificate reads "to Osteroda up our Fryheit". The name goes back to an immunity district . The area from the Johannistor to the Lerbachtal was not under the jurisdiction of the city of Osterode, which is why the area was named with the abstractum freedom .

In the 18th century, linen weavers, donkey drivers and bucket makers were the most important occupations in the village. In the Seven Years' War , many houses were looted. Only in the 19th century did the population exceed the 1000 mark and since the 20th century the number has fluctuated around 2000.

On February 1, 1971, freedom was incorporated into the district town of Osterode am Harz.
