Albrecht II , Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg ( November 1, 1419 - August 15, 1485 ) was Prince of Grubenhagen , ruled from 1440 until his death in 1485.

Life

Albrecht II was the third son of Duke Erich I , grandson of Duke Albrecht I , was still a minor when his father died on May 27, 1427, which is why Duke Otto the Younger von Grubenhagen- Osterode was the guardian of him and until 1440 his brothers Heinrich and Ernst took over. After that, the three brothers ruled collectively until Heinrich's death in 1464, as was tradition in the Grubenhagen line.

After Heinrich's death, since Ernst renounced and became a clergyman, he took over the government and guardianship of Heinrich's son of the same name . Albrecht II was involved in feuds several times. In 1477, Duke Wilhelm the Younger of Göttingen got into an argument with Einbeck and in 1479 camped with his army in front of the city. The citizens of Einbeck went to meet him in the open; Duke Wilhelm lured the enemy into an ambush and inflicted a complete defeat on them. According to the chroniclers, more than 300 Einbecker were killed and over 800 captured and brought to Wilhelm's Hardegsen Castle. While the dukes Wilhelm and Albrecht settled their dispute in Göttingen on December 5, 1479 without a fight between the two, the Einbecker had to redeem their fellow citizens with 30,000 guilders and place themselves under Wilhelm's protection.

After his ward Heinrich reached the age of majority in 1479, his uncle and nephew agreed to rule their lands. Albrecht kept Herzberg Castle and Osterode Castle, while Heinrich received the Heldenburg . The Grubenhagen Castle and the towns of Osterode and Einbeck were ruled jointly.

Albrecht was married to Elisabeth, daughter of Count Wolrad von Waldeck , who gave birth to three sons and a daughter, Sophie, who died at the age of 6. Of the sons, Ernst died soon after his father's death, Philipp followed in the government and Erich became bishop of Osnabrück and Paderborn , in 1532 also elected bishop of Münster , but died on May 14 of the same year before he was confirmed.

Albrecht is buried in Osterode.
