In 1984 the Birkhäuser Verlag Basel decided to publish a magazine in the newly founded "3B Verlags AG". In November 1984 the first issue of the magazine BwieBasel appeared with the title "How child-hostile are we Basler?"

It was a hodgepodge of political, social and general issues. Various journalists, who mainly worked for the local daily newspapers, were commissioned for the content. They were not used to writing articles for a magazine. In addition, they did not have the appropriate visual material; the photographers usually provided pictures of celebrities, politicians, accidents or current shots of daily events. In addition, the magazine - in order to fully utilize the in-house print shop - was printed on newsprint using web offset ; the print quality was very poor, the paper looked cheap and yellowed quickly. Since the publication did not sell well, the board of directors actually wanted to discontinue publication.

But the director at the time insisted on a second attempt: he sought contact with the management of the Basler Zeitung (Basel, BS), and together they founded Multipress, the publisher of the new magazine BwieBasel. They commissioned graphic artists Albert Gomm and Peter Affolter to design a logo for the magazine and appointed Doris Tschan as the new editor. The first issue of BwieBasel with the new look was to appear as a review of the Basel Carnival in 1985. Doris Tschan asked her brother Walter Sütterlin to accompany her to the carnival and to take as many photos as possible. Sütterlin was actually a teacher, but photography had been his hobby for a long time. The first issue of BwieBasel with the new logo and many expressive photos was published at the end of March under the title “F for Fasnacht”. The company Multipress had the title and the spelling registered as a trademark with the Office for Intellectual Property. (The brand is now owned by Spalentor Verlag AG)

As a result, several issues were always published within the framework of one topic; after “F as in Carnival”, topics were dealt with in alphabetical order; it was followed by "B like ..." (Barfüsserplatz, Ballett, Bank, Bäcker), "C like ..." (Claraplatz, Chemie, Chrischona, Centralbahnplatz, Coguff), "D like ..." (roofs, Dalbe, Dreispitz, Dornach, de Wette, Dekor / Drache) etc. Another series dealt with the Basel tram lines, which were accompanied by photographs and text, there were issues in which the editorial team followed a wind direction - starting from the Basel market square (Basel im Northwest etc.) or where a country was presented (“Basel and Denmark”). Individual topics followed later ("Das underground Basel", "Das weisse Basel"). The majority of the photos were created by Walter Sütterlin and enjoyed great popularity. The number of subscribers and kiosk sales rose to around 10,000 copies, and the editorial team was steadily expanded. Doris Tschan placed orders with local journalists and editors such as -minu , Corinna Christen or Meta Zweifel. She also founded a publishing house (B-Basel Verlag) herself and published books in which photos of her brother were published. After a restructuring of the Birkhäuser Verlag , it no longer wanted to publish the magazine BwieBasel. The expenses for the editorial team, a publishing director, a secretary and others had become too high, and the publisher wanted to get out of the magazine business entirely.

Since September 1997

Today's editorial team (at that time still operating under the name Effort Verlag) found out about the sales request through a printing specialist and acquired the magazine with all subscribers and trademark rights in June 1997 after negotiations with the then Birkhauser managing director Helmut A. Billich. The parties have agreed not to disclose the sales price. Editor-in-chief Doris Tschan was not at all pleased about the sale and "said goodbye" to the readers with the last issue "A for Aadie".

The BwieBasel edition May 1997 and the last edition under the direction of Doris Tschan from August 1997

The new owners, Christian Lienhard and Christiane Widmer Lienhard, decided to realign the magazine. Since the first issue under her direction, each magazine has only ever been dedicated to one topic. This is a historic items presented (footage from state institutions such as the State Archives of Basel-Stadt , the Basel Historical Museum , the Archaeological Soil Research Basel-Stadt, the University Library of Basel-Stadt, etc.). Reports, interviews, impressions or architectural considerations deepen the topic and bring it to the present. The subscribers were welcomed with the first two issues: in September 1997 “Basel und seine Salz” appeared, in October 1997 “Basel und das Brot”. In 2004, the two owners acquired Spalentor Verlag AG, to which they transferred the magazine. The same team has been responsible for research, texts, photos, graphics, layout, implementation and production since 1997: Christiane Widmer researches and writes, Christian Lienhard photographs and designs.

Every year there is a review of the Basel Carnival with photos, excerpts from Schnitzelbanggen and a selection of clique jewelry. Here is the 2019 edition.

From 1997 to the end of 2016, BwieBasel was published ten times a year; then the rhythm was reduced to six annual editions.
