Bwlch y Ddeufaen

The bigger stone

The Bwlch y Ddeufaen ( German  "Pass of the Two Stones" ) is a mountain pass in Gwynedd in Wales on the former Roman road Sarn Helen from Caerhun (Canovium) to Caernarfon ( Segontium ) that can only be walked or on horseback . It lies between the peaks of the Tal y Fan and the Drum, in the Carneddau Range in northern Snowdonia .

The smaller stone

At the western end of the remote pass there are two large and two smaller menhirs . The westernmost is a cuboid block almost 2.0 meters high, accompanied by a small pair of stones in the east, none of which are over half a meter high. Further east in the valley is the highest of the group, which is around 3.0 meters high.

Menhirs are difficult to date. Since the southern slopes of Tal-y-Fan contain some Neolithic chamber tombs ( English chambered tombs ) ( Caerhun ), the stones could be contemporary, but more likely from the later Bronze Age .

In the vicinity there is a stone circle Druid’s Circle (Conwy) and the portal Tomb Maen y Bardd ( German  "the Bardenstein" ).
