The Círculo de Bellas Artes (Society of Fine Arts) is a private Madrid cultural institution.

history

The Círculo was created in 1880 on the initiative of some artists. Especially around 1900 the institution received its glamor from people such as the Nobel Prize winner Jacinto Benavente and the comedy writer Carlos Arniches , the young Pablo Picasso took painting lessons here and Ramón María del Valle-Inclán frequented his salon.

In 1983 there was a de facto re-establishment. The so far rather closed elitist circle opened up to the public. The institution's building, the work of the architect Antonio Palacios , on Calle de Alcalá and Gran Vía has been a listed building since 1981 . The Circulo also owns more than 1,200 works of art and a valuable archive. From 2003 to 2012, César Rendueles curated the Capital Art Association.
