C. Thyagaraja Chettiar ( Chidambaram Thyagaraja Chettiar , Tamil : சி. தியாகராச செட்டியார் Ci. Tiyākarāca Ceṭṭiyār [ ˈt̪ijaːɡəˌraːdʒə ˈtʃeʈːijaːr ]; born 1826 in Puvalur ; died 1888 ) was a Tamil scholar.

Thyagaraja Chettiar was born in 1826 in the small town of Puvalur in the Tiruchirappalli district of today's Tamil Nadu state in southern India . He came from a wealthy family of Shivaite Hindus from the Chettiar merchant caste . As a boy, Thyagaraja Chettiar received traditional training in Tamil literature from various teachers in the area of his hometown Puvalur. In 1840 he joined the poet scholar T. Meenakshisundaram Pillai in Tiruchirappalli and soon became his most important student. Thyagaraja Chettiar soon made a name for himself as a scholar and became a specialist in grammatical literature, particularly the nannul . In the traditional Tamil system, scribes were always poets themselves. Thyagaraja Chettiar also wrote some poetic works in the Prabandham genre. In 1865 Thyagaraja Chettiar received a post as a Tamil lecturer at the State College of Kumbakonam City . After retiring in 1880, he returned to the Tiruchirappalli area. He died in 1888.

As Thyagaraja Chettiar's successor at the College of Kumbakonam, UV Swaminatha Iyer , a younger student of Meenakshisundaram Pillais, was appointed at his instigation. Swaminatha Iyer, who later became famous for his role in the rediscovery of the ancient Tamil sangam literature , remained connected to Thyagaraja Chettiar throughout his life. In his honor Swaminatha Iyer named the house in Madras (Chennai), in which he lived from 1904 until his death in 1942, Thyagaraja Vilas . Swaminatha Iyer also published a biography of Thyagaraja Chettiars (published in 1942) and printed text editions of several of his poetic works.
