C166

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

C166 is a 16-bit microcontroller architecture from the semiconductor division of Siemens (now known as Infineon ) in cooperation with STMicroelectronics from 1993. It is based on the RISC concept, but has some microcontroller-typical extensions, such as the Example bit-addressable memory and an interrupt system optimized for low latency times . When this architecture was introduced, the focus was on offering the most efficient replacement possible for the aging architecture of the 8051 controller from Intel , thereby making the jump from 8 to 16 bit register width.

There are now no active (i.e. still produced) representatives of this family, as it has now been replaced by the C167 , XC167 and XE166 families , but the C166 architecture now forms the basis of one of the most important 16-bit controller families in industry.
