The CAP-1 Planalto was a military trainer aircraft produced by the Brazilian manufacturer Companhia Aeronáutica Paulista .

History and construction

The CAP-1 was developed in Brazil during World War II . It was a low wing aircraft with a fixed tail wheel landing gear . Teachers and students sat one behind the other in open cockpits. The aircraft project was developed by the Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas (IPT) under the designation IPT-4 Planalto . CAP was commissioned with the production, but IPT insisted on a wing profile designed there, which led to serious stability problems in the aircraft produced.

CAP-3 were called CAP-1s, which were equipped with a de Havilland Gipsy with 130 hp instead of the Franklin 4AC engine . The stability problem remained untouched until CAP engineer Oswaldo Fadigas reworked the wings of the GAP-6. The company tried to offer this last type to the Ministry of Aviation, but only succeeded in selling conversion kits for the existing CAP-1 and CAP-3.
