The book for playing is a supplement with scenarios, variants and subtitles (subtitles) for the game The Settlers of Catan by Klaus Teuber . It was published by Kosmos-Verlag in 2000 and is essentially the product of the ideas competition that was initiated in 1997 when the expansion of the seafarers appeared . A material box was sold together with the book in a slipcase, in which the game material required for the various scenarios and variants can be stored. The scenario illustrations were created by Jürgen Zimmermann, the graphics of the game accessories by Franz Vohwinkel , Michaela Schelk and Birgit Ender were responsible for the overall design. The book also contains a large number of pictures of Klaus Teuber's first drafts for the board and card game . In an extra chapter on the card game, “The small card game tournament” by Oliver Abendroth is presented, along with tips on deck building and cards from Brigitte and Wolfgang Ditt, which represent the state of deck development at that time.

variants

In addition to the scenarios, the book contains various variants that can be integrated into the games individually or in combination, but, unlike the scenarios, do not require a fixed playing field.

  • Events on Catan (proposal by the Lang and Meister / Pulheim couple)
Here, each yield number rolled triggers an additional event.
Additional material: table of events
The modern industrial world has found its way into Catan. Each player can build a factory instead of a settlement once during the game. If the number of an adjacent landscape is rolled, the player can choose from which of the adjacent landscapes he takes a resource.
Additional material: 1 factory with stand per player.
  • Poverty is not a shame (Brigitte and Wolfgang Ditt)
If a player does not receive any raw materials, he receives a chip instead. At the beginning of his own turn he may give up as many chips as he has victory points and determine the result of the die roll.
The variant was presented in advance on the Catan website.
Additional material: 30 red chips
Here, too, you get a chip if you go away empty-handed when rolling the yields. For 3 chips you can move the robber in this variant.
Additional material: 30 red chips
  • Districts (idea: HR Gottwald)
A field that is completely surrounded by its own roads is safe from the robber.
  • Castles on Catan (Fritz Gruber)
If a player discards 2 face-up knight cards, he may place a castle on a space where he has a settlement or city. This field is now safe from the robbers.
Additional material: 1 castle with stand per player.
This variant was also included in the Atlantis expansion.
  • Volcanoes on Catan (Bastian Schulz)
The volcanoes replace any fields, in the original version the desert. Each corner of the volcanic field has a number, if the number of the volcanic field is rolled and then the number of one of the corners is rolled, a settlement located there must be removed from the field and a city converted into a settlement.
The variant appeared in November 1997 and was presented on the Catan website.
Additional material: 1 to 3 volcanic fields.
  • Vulcania (Martin and Elke Zierke)
Here one of the 5 landscape fields and a desert are placed around the volcano. The landscape spaces are assigned the numbers 2, 6, 8, 10 and 12. On a 7, instead of moving the robber, the player may move the number chips clockwise around the volcano.
Additional material: 1 volcanic field.
  • Dragon fighter (Wolfgang Lüdtke)
Here the dragon is moved after each complete game round. Players who have a town on a space on which the dragon lands must give up one resource per town. You can protect yourself against the dragon by playing knight cards.
Additional material: 1 dragon with stand, 1 volcanic space, 1 directional space with rotating arrow, 12 victory point chips.
  • The Magic 7 (Silke Dennenmoser)
Instead of the desert, a magic field is laid out. This shows the citadel known from the Zauberer & Drachen expansion of the card game . If the dice combination 1 and 6 is rolled during the yield phase, players who have a settlement on the magic field receive one development card, and two for a city.
This variant was also included in the Atlantis expansion.
Additional material: 1 magic field, 1 chip with dice 1 and 6
  • The enchanted island (Fritz Gruber)
Here the magic field is used on a separate island. If you build a settlement there, you can immediately swap 2 number chips on the game board, except for 2, 6, 8 and 12.
Additional material: 1 magic field
  • Catan is round (several authors)
Red chips are placed on 4 corners of the board. By giving 3 wood and 3 wool you can sail out at one corner and in again at the other.
Additional material: 4 red chips.
  • Balloonists (Christoph Henze, Volker Busch, Christoph Schäfer)
If the construction of settlements was previously tied to one's own road or ship network, with this variant the players can use a hot air balloon to reach remote settlement areas and establish settlements there.
Additional material: direction field with rotating arrow, 1 balloon with stand per player.
  • Atlantis (Stefan Röse)
In this variant, the coastal fields are threatened by storm surges. A storm surge marker is placed on each field that is rolled after the income has been distributed. If there are 7 of them on a field, it is replaced by a sea field. Towns and streets that are then only surrounded by water are going under. The game ends here either when a player scores the intended number of victory points or when a certain number of land spaces go under.
This variant was the namesake for the Atlantis expansion, in which it is also included.
Additional material: approx. 100 storm surge markers
  • The specialist rule (Stefan Risthaus)
This variant is similar to the "The Specialists" scenario, but is played without a fixed game board.
Additional material: 6 specialist cards, 5/8 victory point chips
  • Pirate variants
    • Harbor blockade: In this variant proposed by many players, the pirate also blocks the harbor function of the sea space on which he is standing. This variant is now also part of the rules for the German championship.
    • Sink ships (Anja Kirchmaier): Here, when the pirate is relocated, an adjacent terminal ship can be removed from the field if an odd number is determined in a dice test.
    • Capture ships (Anja Kirchmaier): Here you can try to capture the ship after you have handed in an ore card. If the dice test is successful, you can place the ship in front of you, so that it counts as a knight card and can contribute to the greatest knight power.

Special

Since the basic game appeared from 2003 without water fields, but with a frame that could be assembled, and the seafaring expansion with other frames, all scenarios can no longer be played with this new version. For some, an alternative setup was designed.

For the tenth anniversary of the Seafarers' expansion, the scenario “The Colonies” appeared in a special edition in autumn 2007.

Availability

The book was published in two editions, but is currently out of print at the publisher.
