The locomotives of the CFL class 450 are diesel-hydraulic shunting locomotives from the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (CFL). They are designated with the CFL numbers 451–455.

history

Soon after the end of the Second World War , it was an urgent concern of the CFL to rationalize the steam-powered shunting service. For this purpose, five 400 hp diesel shunting locomotives were to be purchased in 1952. After evaluating all offers, the CFL decided to purchase five machines from Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz . The Deutz locomotive builders had already resumed the new development of locomotives from around 1948/49, which initially linked to the tried and tested old types and developed them further.

The German Wehrmacht locomotive WR 360 C 14 (V 36) was refreshed in the early 1950s and offered as the V6M 536R with rounded shapes from 1952 , which the CFL then made use of. The CFL locomotives (451–455) differed only slightly from her in terms of the key technical features.

Significant innovations were a revised, more powerful engine with now 450 hp and an exterior revision with more generous dimensions (length, front height, driver's cab) and rounded shapes. The wheelset was now 4000 mm and the fuel tank now held 1500 liters. A higher service weight and a stronger engine also resulted in a significant increase in starting tractive effort (16,000 kg).

The commissioning of the 451–455 took place in November / December 1953. They immediately took over the shunting service in Differdange , Pétange and Luxembourg as well as the transport of light transfer trains.

Whereabouts

At the beginning of the 1970s, the 450 series was replaced by other types. The first was the 452 on July 17, 1970 and the 451 on February 4, 1974, the other three between 1980 and 1982. The 451, 452 and 453 drove for a few years as factory locomotives, while the 455 was transferred to the museum's collection.
