CITEMOR is an international theater festival . It takes place every summer in the Portuguese town of Montemor-o-Velho .

history

The origins go back to Professor Paulo Quintela from the University of Coimbra in the 1960s. A first theater festival was held here in 1974 in the year of the Carnation Revolution , by the CITEC - Centro de Iniciação Teatral Esther de Carvalho . The CITEC is a theater group from Montemor-o-Velho founded in 1970, which still provides the organizational structures for the festival. With its origins it is considered to be the country's oldest theater festival. His name CITEMOR, used from 1978 onwards, is a construction made up of “CITEC” and “Montemor-o-Velho”. From his perspective, the festival has looked at all related art movements since the beginning, and in addition to theater also included dance, music, cinema, video installations, etc. a. a. The performances are usually commissioned work for the CITEMOR, produced by the artists themselves on site. The festival has always focused on promoting new talent and trends.

One of the main features of the festival was the opportunity for artists to develop and show new pieces on site. The works were then performed internationally, including in Germany. Due to serious financial cuts, the previous accommodation regulations for artists and support for the development of their productions on site are currently being revised.

program

Theatrical performances, performances and exhibitions take place in the town's castle and in the town itself . After the announced financial cuts in support of the festival, a more political orientation of the contributions is expected.
