94.9FM The Rock ( CKGE-FM ) is a Canadian private radio broadcaster based in Oshawa , Ontario , Canada . The station broadcasts an active rock format with an output of 50 kW.

history

The station began broadcasting in 1957 and was operated by Lakeland Broadcasting under the brand name 93.5 CKLB-FM. Initially an easy listening format was broadcast. In 1966 the callsign was changed to CKQS. In the same year the frequency was changed to the current one.

In 1979 the station was taken over by Grand Broadcasting. This led to another change of the callsign to CKQT. Grant Broadcasting was acquired by Power Broadcasting in 1990.

In 1993 the station changed its broadcast format and broadcast an adult contemporary format. The callsgin was retained, but the brand "The Edge" was added. In 1995 the station was renamed "Magic 94.9". In 1999 the broadcast format was changed to a modern-adult-contemporary format in order to attract younger listeners.

In 2000, Power Broadcasting was taken over by Corus Entertainment . In 2003 the station was sold to Durham Radio Inc.
