COGAG drive

Principle of a COGAG drive system

A COGAG drive (for Combined Gas and Gas ) is a ship propulsion concept in which two different gas turbines are switched to the drive shaft (s). The advantage of this type of drive, similar to the related CODAG drive , is the low fuel consumption, the disadvantage is the complicated gearbox .

COGAG drives are used in particular in warship construction. The first warships to receive this system were the Amazon- class of the Royal Navy in the 1970s . The system proved to be maintenance-intensive and the complicated system proved extremely unstable in rough seas.
