Józef Dwernicki (born March 19, 1779 in Warsaw , † December 23, 1857 in Lopatyn on the estate of Count Zamoyski) was a Polish general .

Dwernicki joined the Polish Legion and took part in the Poniatowski campaign in eastern Galicia in 1809 and moved to Russia in 1812 . After the retreat he was promoted to colonel in 1814 . After the peace he entered the service of Russia and in 1826 became a brigadier general .

After the outbreak of the November Uprising in 1830, he was entrusted with organizing the Polish cavalry . He won the first victory over the Russians at Stoczek on February 14, 1831 . He was then sent to Volhynia and took a firm position at Boremel against the Rüdiger corps. On April 19, he gained some advantages, but then had to give way to the Russian superiority, but managed his transition over the Styr . However, he was eventually trapped by General Rüdiger at Mokalowka and on April 27, 1831, transferred to Galicia . His corps had to move to Hungary as a prisoner of war .

From 1832 Dwernicki lived temporarily in France and in London . In 1848 he returned to Galicia, where he died in Lopatyn in December 1857 on the estate of Count Zamoyski.
