COMSOL Multiphysics , formerly FEMLAB, is software for simulating physical processes that can be described by means of differential equations .

Today the program is sold through direct branches (for example COMSOL Multiphysics GmbH) and through a worldwide network of distributors (for example Humusoft (Prague), Addlink (Madrid), Pitotech (Taipei) ...).

The first FEMLAB conference (today: COMSOL conference) took place in November 2005, with the aim of providing a common platform for those interested in research, teaching and development.

COMSOL Multiphysics

The program is based on the so-called finite element method (FEM) and is used in research, teaching and development. In addition to simple FEM calculations, various physical problems (multiphysics) can be coupled in a simple manner. An iterative switching back and forth between different applications is not necessary, coupled systems of equations can be solved simultaneously.

The simulation software has a modular structure. In addition to the "COMSOL Multiphysics" basic package, the following optional packages are offered:

Electromagnetics

  • AC / DC modules
  • RF modules
  • Wave Optics Module
  • Ray Optics Module
  • Plasma modules

The previous versions of COMSOL Multiphysics were called FEMLAB (FEM-laboratory). FEMLAB emerged from a toolbox for Matlab , the Partial Differential Equation (PDE) Toolbox. Entering your own partial differential equations is part of the basic package.

Interfaces

COMSOL Multiphysics offers a bidirectional interface to MATLAB and Simulink , which enables COMSOL Multiphysics to be scripted using the MATLAB scripting language (extension of approx. 650 new functions).

Other interfaces:

  • Material data import via MATWEB
  • Simpleware
  • ECAD import (ODB ++) via the AC / DC, MEMS and RF modules
  • CAPE-OPEN via the Reaction Engineering Lab
  • CHEMKIN through the Reaction Engineering Lab
  • SPICE via the AC / DC, MEMS and RF modules
