Cañuelas is the capital of the Partido Cañuelas of the same name in Gran Buenos Aires . It has about 31,000 inhabitants and is located about 60 km south of Buenos Aires .

The city and its surroundings benefit from the proximity to the capital. Many porteños have estancias or weekend houses there. For the same reason and because of the proximity to the airport, companies are also settling there. Between 1991 and 2001, the city's population increased by 28.2%.

In 1821 the Capilla ( chapel ) del Carmen de las Cañuelas was built in the current area of ​​Cañuelas , after which the place was named. The place was officially founded on January 22, 1822. In 1825 the surveyor Felipe Senillosa drafted a development plan for a village around the chapel. In the following years various estancias (farms) were founded. In 1864 the first city administration was established by law. The population increased steadily and in 1868 was already almost 5,000 inhabitants. In 1885 the Barracas - Cañuelas railway line was inaugurated. With the increasing population, the infrastructure of the place also grew, schools, a hospital, a library and other facilities were built. In 2007 the population of the Partidos was just under 48,000, of which around two thirds live in Cañuelas city.

The city also has La Martona dairy, the first in Argentina. It is said that this is where the Argentine specialty dulce de leche was invented.

Sports

Cañuelas is home to the Cañuelas FC football club, which plays in the 4th Argentine league. There are also several polo clubs here, including Club La Dolfina , which hosts the Copa Diamante every November.

traffic

Cañuelas is connected to Buenos Aires by the Ezeiza-Cañuelas Autopista (highway). A railway line also leads to the capital via Ezeiza.
