Originally, the tower was used as a flag post for the city's harbor, continuing a tradition established by the British Navy on Signal Hill in 1704. In 1901 Guglielmo Marconi received the first wireless transatlantic signal from Cornwall , England, not far from the tower : the letter "S" in Morse code . A radio station was housed on the first floor of the tower until the 1960s. Today the tower houses a shop selling articles related to the tower's history, an exhibition on Marconi and the Society of Newfoundland Radio Amateurs broadcasting station .
