Caelius Aurelianus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Caelius Aurelianus (Siccensis) was a late antique Numidian doctor of the 5th century in the Roman Empire and author of medical writings. All that is known of his life is that he came from Sicca (possibly Sicca Veneria in what is now Tunis ) and that he followed the methodological school as a doctor . This knowledge can be found in an entry in a catalog of the Lorsch manuscripts , under which part of his writings (cf. the Lorsch Pharmacopoeia , which in the 8th century like Gariopont in the 11th century on the "Aurelius-Escolapius" of the 7th century Aurelianus falls back) had received. Stylistic studies lead to the conclusion that he lived and worked in the first half of the 5th century AD. His writings are a transmission of the knowledge of the Greek doctor Soranos (2nd century) and a free translation of his books into Latin . Also based on stylistic considerations, it is assumed that neither Greek nor Latin was his mother tongue. Since the works of Sorano have largely been lost, Caelius' surviving books give De morbis acutis et chronicis (three books on acute illnesses and five books on chronic illnesses) and the extensive fragments of the written Responsiones medicinales (a brief outline of medicine in question and answer) ) an invaluable insight into ancient Greek medical knowledge.
