Cafe barricade

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Café barricade , even barricade was a cafe left hot spot and venue in the Berlin district of Gesundbrunnen . The café was founded on June 2, 1978 as a left-wing bar collective, from which a typical Berlin corner bar had been taken over. Since then, the owners have changed several times. However, the new owners always came from the circle of regular guests. A non-profit association has been running the café since 2003. From June 2016 the Café Barrikade was located at Martin-Opitz-Straße 23, but it is now closed forever.

Its interior was hardly changed by the various collectives and owners, so that in 2016 the café still looked like a West Berlin corner pub from the 1970s.

In 1981, three houses were occupied in Buttmannstrasse , where the café was also located. The café quickly became a meeting place for the squatter scene, but it also served as a venue. The artist Nikki Sudden performed here regularly , and legend has it that Rio Reiser wrote the lyrics for the Rauch-Haus song in the café. Years later, the German author Thilo Bock organized his monthly reading stage “Dichter als Goethe” with a guest.

The Café Barrikade was the model for the Black Café in Vienna , also an established institution on the Viennese scene.
