The Buttmann road is a traffic route in the Berlin district of Gesundbrunnen . The street runs parallel to Pankstraße, goes from Badstraße and into Brunnenplatz with the district court of Wedding . The street houses several listed buildings from the Wilhelminian era . It was best known for political and social disputes that had their origins there time and again.

Buttmannstrasse is named after Philipp Buttmann , the former pastor and preacher at the nearby St. Paul's Church .

history

The Luisenbad park was located on the site between St. Pauls Church , Thurneysser-, Gropius- and Badstraße, which was bought and parceled out by the Hirschler brothers' trading company in 1886. Buttmannstrasse was laid out in 1886 together with Gropiusstrasse and Thurneysserstrasse. The building contractor Max Kühnlein built five-story apartment buildings for the Terraingesellschaft 1887-1892, which were individually resold.

During the Weimar Republic , Buttmannstrasse was one of the germ cells of the red wedge . The residents consisted almost exclusively of workers and their families, the vast majority of whom belonged to the KPD . In times of street fighting, Buttmannstrasse was a preferred parade location for the SA , which wanted to demonstrate its presence in the communist core area. After the " seizure of power " in 1933, the SA took over the well-known Antifa restaurant at Buttmannstrasse 2 and converted it into an SA storm bar.

In the 1980s Buttmannstrasse became a center of the squatter scene in northern Berlin. In the first years of the 21st century, Buttmannstrasse came into the national media primarily through crime and police operations.

The following three houses on Buttmannstrasse were occupied first:

  • Buttmannstrasse 2, occupied March 17, 1981, vacated January 15, 1983
  • Buttmannstrasse 16, occupied July 11, 1981, vacated July 12, 1981, occupied July 13, 1981, vacated January 15, 1983
  • Buttmannstrasse 18/19, occupied March 17, 1981, vacated January 15, 1983

Several incidents in 2007 drew nationwide media attention when police struggled to arrest suspects. In April 2007, there was a fight between two extended families, and the police had to deal with 150 people in total. In August of the same year, police tried to control a 23-year-old suspected cell phone thief. Within a very short time, arguments arose between around 30 friends and relatives of the accused and the police. Another incident occurred in 2008 when a motorcyclist was involved in an accident with a little girl; an 18 year old tried to beat the motorcyclist. When the police tried to arrest the 18-year-old, they were attacked by around 50 onlookers.

Monument protection

There are several protected architectural monuments in Buttmannstrasse. The tenement houses 1–1A (built in 1889 by Carl Bonne), number 21 (1888/80 by R. Strack) and the tenement houses 4, 13, 15 and 16 built by Max Kühnlein in 1888–1892 belong to the Gesundbrunnen center . The client for the houses built by Kühnlein was the Hirschler trading company; the individual buildings were built by several craftsmen and traders. A well-preserved listed water pump of the type Lauchhammer No. 1 stands on the corner of Badstrasse.

Residents

The residents of Buttmannstrasse are, like the residents of the neighboring district, low-income and predominantly of migrant origin. There are always conflicts with the police, some of which have earned the street the reputation of a no-go area .

Various social and politically committed initiatives have settled in Buttmannstrasse. The Café barricade existed from 1977 to 2016, was considered living the squatter scene and saw himself as the "last bastion of the People's Republic Wedding." The Berlin Homeless sitting since 2013 in the Buttmann street 1a. A neighborhood shop has been located in the premises of a disused bakery at Buttmannstrasse 16 since June 2011, which is intended to increase social cohesion in the neighborhood. It is operated by the Buttmann 16 neighborhood initiative in cooperation with the Gangway association and the local housing company Gesobau . Right next door is the Salam association, which is primarily intended to support refugees from Syria on arrival in Germany and their subsequent integration. It is founded and operated by Syrian refugees.
