Michael H. Rohde

Michael Hermann Rohde (born July 27, 1960 in Lippstadt ) is a German artist .

Life

After childhood, school and training as a machine fitter in the Gütersloh area , Rohde studied mechanical engineering at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences . After seven years as an engineer, he completely reoriented himself and began studying art therapy and art education in 1995 . Immediately afterwards, he continued studying fine art at the same Ottersberg University of Applied Sciences for 1½ years . He then switched to Bernhard Johannes Blume at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and completed a two-year postgraduate course .

In 2003 he moved to the outskirts of Berlin, near Bernau . In 2009 he was homeless for five months, as a result of several refusals from Berlin authorities to rent an apartment in Berlin. From this experience he later developed his artistic theme From Below ("from below").

With the move to Brandenburg in 2003, Rohde changed his work topic to “Becoming aware through perception within”. With digital processing of large format photos of living spaces, he steadily expanded his own perspectives until he came up with the topic From Below in 2010 . These large-format pictures show room views from below, as if the recipient were looking through a glass floor into the room above. The works are mainly executed as prints on photo paper in order to create the illusion of a photograph.

Often referred to as a photographer, he sees himself as a painter. Rohde lives and works in Berlin, his apartment with studio is on Buttmannstrasse in Gesundbrunnen . The composition, color, richness of detail and size of his works are based on old Dutch painting , but at the same time they show the severity, reduction and clarity of minimalism . Most of the works are composed with an extreme colourfulness like in Pop-Art. In terms of content and composition, traces of the engagement with the painters Caspar David Friedrich , Jan Vermeer and Giorgio de Chirico are included.
