The Café Milani was opened in June 1848 by the Italian restaurateur Christian Joseph Milani on the Roßmarkt . In 1854 the building on the corner of Am Salzhaus street was taken over by the Englischer Hof next door . The café was relocated next to the Comoedienhaus at the other end of the Roßmarkt. It was praised by guests for its Parisian flair.

In 1874 Milani moved into a classicist building with his café in one of the best locations in Frankfurt, at the beginning of the Zeil opposite the Katharinenkirche . Today the Kaufhof is located here . Café Milani now offered space for over 300 visitors on two floors, and it also had a ladies' salon and a hotel. In the summer a pavilion was added on the Zeil.

From the end of September 1848, the conservative faction in the Frankfurt National Assembly (Paulskirchenparlament) met here . As was customary at the time, the group was also named Café Milani after their meeting place .

Christian Joseph Milani died in 1889. The business was taken over by his son Adolf. In 1902 the classical building was demolished. In its place, the Auffahrt bookstore built a magnificent building in the neo-renaissance style under the architect Otto Sturm . Almost 40 years later the houses of the bookstore Auffahrt, which were only a few decades old, as well as the neighboring buildings of the Frank & Baer company were closed. In 1928 the Tietz department store erected an important new building here for its Frankfurt branch with a striking Art Déco facade around the corner at the western end of the Zeil.

Café Milani moved to the corner of Schillerstraße and Biebergasse, where it continued in a more modest setting until Adolf Milani's death in 1931.
