history

Café Nicola was founded in 1787 by an Italian named Nicola or Nicolau Breteiro. It was then taken over by the Portuguese José Pedro Silva, who kept the name of the café. The most famous regular guest was the poet Manoel Maria de Barbosa du Bocage (1765-1805). Silva, the owner of Café Nicola, was the most important supporter of the impoverished and sick Bocage.

Even in later years the café remained a meeting place for writers, journalists and politicians. It got its current appearance in 1935 when it was rebuilt in Art Deco style according to plans by the architect Raul Tojal . Since then, several oil paintings by the painter Fernando dos Santos (1892–1965) show scenes from the life of Bocage.

The Café Nicola is now one of the attractions for tourists.
