Nicola Cafés is a Portuguese brand and company that roast and market coffee. After market leader Delta Cafés and the Nestlé subsidiary SICAL , the Nicola parent company Nutricafés is Portugal's third largest coffee roaster.
history
The company has its origins in Café Nicola, founded in 1787 on Rossio Square in Lisbon , the origins of the company itself can be traced back to 1779. Café Nicola offered its own coffee blends from the Portuguese colonies of Brazil and São Tomé and Príncipe . With nationwide sales and increasing demand, it became necessary to set up an own roastery. It was built in the mid-19th century in the Lisbon suburb of Venda Nova , where the company is still based today.
In 1999 the Portuguese company Nutrinveste bought Nicola Cafés and formed its Nutricafés coffee division together with the Chave D´Ouro coffee brand . In 2006 the Portuguese investment company Explorer Investments / MCH Private Equitiy took over Nutricafés.
In July 2016, Nutricafés was sold by the investment company to the Italian coffee company Segafredo Zanetti for 74.5 million euros . This made Segafredo the third largest coffee roaster in Portugal. In 2015 Nutricafés achieved sales of 34.1 million euros.
