Caffè sospeso

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Caffè sospeso [kafˈfɛ soˈspeːzo] (dt. Floating coffee or deferred coffee ) is a local peculiarity of the Neapolitan culture. Since the turn of the 20th century , the custom of paying for another coffee in addition to your own coffee became established in many bars in the city . This coffee is noted by the barista and served to someone in need upon request.

Locals attribute the tradition to the fact that the Neapolitans have often been left to fend for themselves throughout history. In this environment, structures of self-government developed (see also Camorra ) to compensate for the lack of political leadership.

Current situation

The tradition lives on in Naples to this day. However, it can usually only be found in the old town and only fulfills a limited social function. It is particularly lively practiced around Christmas time.

The euro and financial crisis led to initiatives starting in 2008 in other European countries to adopt this tradition in other cities. In Bulgaria, 150 cafes were won for this. In Spain this action spread under the name “Café pendiente”. Many other European countries followed. In the meantime, cafes in North and South America and Australia are also offering coffee gifts. Various pages were created on the Internet listing these cafes.

The Suspended Coffees Germany project has existed in Germany since 2013 . With the help of a website and a Facebook page, cafes are to be won over to the concept. Over 200 participants from all over Germany are currently taking part in the campaign.

Since July 2017, Suspended Coffees Germany has changed structurally. It has joined the TiMMi ToHelp eV association. Suspended Coffees Germany is organizing two projects as a campaign: “Donated” and “Care Bags”.

“Donated” is in the tradition of caffè sospeso . However, it has been expanded: Any product or service can be donated for others.
