The Caffrey Electric from 1897

The Caffrey Electric was an experimental electric vehicle , which in 1897 Reno ( Nevada , United States was built).

description

It was designed by Willis G. Caffrey and manufactured in his iron foundry . Analogous to the functional principle of the trolleybus , the vehicle received the traction current via an overhead line that Caffrey had installed in the vicinity of his company. The vehicle itself was a two-seater highwheeler , so it had huge, iron-tyred wooden spoke wheels. The wheelbase was so short that the front and rear wheels almost touched. The driver and front passenger sat on a raised bench above the rear axle, the front wheels were steered using levers.

Caffrey's vision was an overland network in areas where there was enough hydropower to generate electricity. According to contemporary sources, the prototype worked satisfactorily. However, Caffrey did not build any other vehicles.
