Caidom

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The CAIDom is since 2005 annually in Brixen be transmitted Downhill -Mountainbikerennen and is considered one of the longest race of this discipline. There are few comparable events in Europe. Amongst other things:

  • Are in Sweden (Maxi Avalanche)
  • Kielder in Scotland (Avalanche enduro)
  • Alpe de Huez in France (Megavalanche)
  • Lenzerheide in Switzerland (Bike Attack)
  • Cervinia in Italy (Maxi Avalanche)

The first CAIDom was organized on September 26, 2004 by the two South Tyrolean mountain bikers Alex Angerer and Alexander Resch. The Voodoo Freestyle Team has been organizing the race since 2005. The name CAIDom is made up of the abbreviation of the starting point ( CAI - summit) and the initial syllable of the destination ( Dom Platz Brixen).

Special features of the CAIDom downhill

While the usual downhills are only 2.5 to 3.5 kilometers, the CAIDom route is over 13 km long. The drivers need at least 20 minutes from start to finish. The route of the CAIDom is also unique, which mostly runs away from paved paths and has a very steep gradient (2000 meters in altitude to 13 km).

Route and key points

CAIDom route profile

The route leads from the highest point of the Ploseberg , the summit plateau of the Telegraphen (2486 m), to the Domplatz in Brixen at 560 m along the ski slopes in open terrain, through narrow single trails in the forest, over meadows and sometimes also on dirt roads.

The key points of the CAIDom are from top to bottom: the start sprint from the summit to the CAI refuge. The “shot” initiated by a narrow S-curve approach on the Schöneben piste. The Rossi staircase, named after Stefano Rossi, at the entrance to the forest of St. Andrä. The elongated “Hexenwegele” and the immediately following, less than a meter wide and consistently steep 70 degree channel of the disused Trametschlift. This is followed by the descent through the forest of St. Andrä, where top speeds of up to 90 km / h can be achieved.

history

The CAIDom was started by the Italian mountain bikers Alex Angerer and Alexander Resch, and the race was held for the first time in 2004. The organizers were inspired by their own bike tours in the area around Brixen, the emergence of the new discipline of mountain bike downhill and the development of the specific Downhill mountain bikes.

Due to the increasing number of participants and the often controversial and ambivalent interest of the population, the race kept making headlines. Nevertheless (or because of that) the race developed into one of the most famous mountain bike events, first in South Tyrol, then in the entire Alpine region. The number of participants in the first edition in 2004 was 24, in 2007 there were already over 100 drivers at the start. Since 2005 there has also been a women's category.

In 2008 the CAIdom was included in the European (French) Avalanche Cup series, only to stand on its own two feet again in 2009 and come out with a new, groundbreaking format: the "King of Plose". This, a combination between pure uphill and pure downhill, was certainly one of the first formats for "all-rounders", mountain bikers who are strong both uphill and downhill, even if the two races on the Plose are definitely extreme. The new format with 2 races on one weekend brought a positive boost to the race and increased the number of participants to over 200.
