The real caimans ( Caiman ) are a genus of caimans (Caimaninae) within the crocodiles (Crocodylia). Real caimans occur exclusively in South America , with the exception of the crocodile caiman, whose distribution area extends to Central America .
There are three types in total:
- Real caimans ( Caiman Spix , 1825 )
The exact relationships between the real caimans and to other caimantaxa are largely unclear, an accepted hypothesis is given here.
