Caisteal Grugaig - Inside of the passage

Caisteal Grugaig (also Dun Totaig or Totaig Broch also "often the Witch Castle" called) is at a low Terrace northwest of Letterfearn on Lochalsh, near Loch Duich and Loch Long in the Highlands in Scotland . The Caisteal Grugaig, made of large stones, is a brochure from the Iron Age from the end of the 1st millennium BC. It is not to be confused with the not far away Dun Grugaig (Glenelg) and Dun Grugaig (Skye) on Skye .

The interior was cleared in 1899 so that many structural features are visible despite the ruined state. The broch has an outer diameter of 16.5 m and an inner diameter of 9.6 m. The irregular bottom inside is the natural surface of the rock and drops about 1.5 m from southwest to northeast. The access is at the lowest point and (like Dun Dornaigil and the Culswick Broch ) has a triangular fall. A door hinge with a locking hole is on the right, and a now blocked guard cell is on the left. In the inner wall there is a small entrance to a round cell with a high cantilever vault . In addition, there is a larger access to a short staircase that rises to a higher level, which is partially closed by a lintel. From the corridor there is access to an inner level, while the stairs lead upwards.

The high access is a feature that was presumably present in many brochures, but is rarely preserved (Broch by Rhiroy). It led to a wooden floor that was supported by an edge ledge less than a meter above the floor and marked the lower level of use. On the opposite side, a corridor opens into two long cells, which run to the right and left in the wall, but are blocked by rubble and are therefore difficult to see. Such long cells could have been used like basements .

Nearby is the lie Eilean Donan Castle and the Broch Dun Telve and Dun Troddan .
